Top 10 NARSAD-Funded Research Developments of 2009
Donors' support of NARSAD-funded research has helped to bring about a new wave of discoveries and developments in the search for cures for mental illness.
We've highlighted below just 10 of these outstanding breakthroughs led by NARSAD-supported scientists.
1. Naturally-Occurring Drug May Relieve Previously Untreatable Symptoms of Schizophrenia, conducted by a multi-institutional team led by NARSAD Investigators Christine Marx, M.D., and Richard Keefe, Ph.D., of the Duke University Medical Center.
2. First Study of Environment-Triggered Genetic Changes in Schizophrenia, conducted by NARSAD Investigators David Braff, M.D., of the University of California, San Diego, and Raquel Gur, M.D., Ph.D., of the University of Pennsylvania.
3. Researchers Discover Genetic Mutations Associated with Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder, led by Jonathan Sebat, Ph.D., of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, including contributions from several NARSAD researchers including Deborah L. Levy, Ph. D., of McLean Hospital.
4. Proper Brain Function, Cells Need to Keep the Beat, led by NARSAD Scientific Council member Karl Deisseroth, M.D., Ph.D., of Stanford University Medical Center.
5. Stimulation Device Offers Relief from Hard-to-Treat Depression, led by NARSAD Investigator Ziad Nahas, M.D., of Medical University of South Carolina.
6. Antidepressant Use Doubles in the US, led by NARSAD Investigator Mark Olfson, M.D., M.P.H., of Columbia University Medical Center and New York State Psychiatric Institute.
7. Scientists Erase Fear Memory, led by NARSAD Investigator Jin-Hee Han, Ph.D., of the University of Toronto.
8. Behavior of Gene in Chimps, Humans Sheds Light On Range of Brain Mysteries, led by NARSAD Investigators Genevieve Konopka, Ph.D., and Daniel Geschwind, M.D., Ph. D., at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.
9. More Pieces Added to Large, Complex Genetic Puzzle of Autism, led by NARSAD Investigator Maja Bucan, Ph.D., of University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
10. Neuroimaging Study Reveals Heightened Emotional Reactivity in Children with Bipolar Disorder, conducted by NARSAD Investigator Mani N. Pavuluri, M.D., Ph.D., and colleagues at the University of Chicago.
